When once I was asked what vocation I do, I had to pause for a moment or two. “Semi-retired” was my banter feeling rather amused Perhaps at that time I was somewhat confused.

“Never a dull moment” is a favourite saying of mine There’s no shortage of ways of spending one’s time. “Time is of the essence” other people will say I’ve a long list of jobs that I’d like done today.

There are clothes I should wash and trousers to mend, Some bills to be paid and mail I should send. The garden needs weeding and the mower won’t start, It probably will when we get that new part.

The dust layer gets thicker as the vacuum lies still, The dog needs a bath and his all-worming pill. But while I procrastinate and bemoan lack of time, To be perfectly honest it suits me just fine.

For a few days each week I enjoy my paid work, While gainfully employed its home duties I shirk. I’d much rather be reading or riding my bike, And thinking up ideas for new poems to write.

Some spend their time serving on committees and boards The community benefits and we all reap rewards. Others will sacrifice for the sake of their sport, Much time is spent training and new skills will be taught.

For those who learn music time’s not always your friend, Daily practice and rehearsal take long weeks on end. Hours well spent when learning something that’s new
The opportunity for knowledge and most worthwhile to do.

But when I reflect on which pieces are missed
It’s family and friends that are top of the list. So, I’ll use my time wisely and prioritise with care Because spare time tomorrow will not always be there.
