We had a well-attended meeting held at the Commercial Club in Albury. State Conference reports were given, and resolutions were discussed.
We held a Street Stall at Bunnings on the Friday following our meeting with the idea of raising $1000 for Samuel Johnson’s “Love Your Sister” organization and the results were amazing – our best ever Bunnings Stall! We had so much to sell, we wondered how it would ever “go”, but it did! Our biggest sellers were the “six packs” of scones with jam and cream on them, and I think we sold around 60 of them! I know Margaret had a full-time job putting jam on scones all morning, they were selling that fast!
A big thank you to all the members who helped, including the two who gave generous donations. Three of us attended the Ag and Environment Day at Erin Earth in Wagga Wagga, and heard guest speakers talking about micro bats—they are very good for eating mosquitos, and did you know that they can eat up to 1200 fruit fly larvae in one hour? This was a most interesting talk about these tiny creatures.
One of the other speakers was the government veterinarian from Temora, who spoke about the various aspects of her job, including the issues of baiting rabbits and wild animals, whilst her friend from Bio Security Land Services also from Temora spoke on caring for the environment in general, including the creating of more disease resistant varieties of seeds and the seedbank which the late Tim Fischer was greatly involved in of stored seeds in case of any major disaster on Earth which is in Norway. After lunch, Sam from Erin Earth gave us a tour and talk around the gardens. Altogether a most interesting day!
We have Cultural Day coming up in July, and we are hoping to contribute an amusing item. Margaret handed out our new Land Cookery Schedules for the year, and next meeting we will have the Chocolate Butter Cake, cooked in a 20cm tin and iced on top only. The Sultana cake results were 1st and 2nd Natalie Hasler, 3rd Lyn Jacobsen. Eunice won the raffle. Next meeting will be held again at the Commercial Club on Wednesday, 10 July at 10.30am.
