I’d like to uphold our canine mate,
A companion who we highly rate.
Often known as man’s best friend,
Whose love and devotion has no end.

Dogs come in sizes large and small,
Some breeds are short and some are tall.
All rescue dogs deserve a home,
With a cosy kennel and a juicy bone.

There’s Shelties, Kelpies and Healers too,
Maltese, Pekingese and Shih Tzu.
From the Yorkshire Terrier to the huge Great Dane,
No two dogs are quite the same.

The Afghan is quite a regal breed
A Chihuahua won’t cost much to feed.
The Bichon requires a special comb,
And a Doberman will guard your home.

Some folks prefer the farming type
That has a bark worse than its bite.
They earn their keep by herding sheep
Then sleep all night without a peep.

Many pups have fur that’s soft and thick,
Not so the Whippet who is sleek and quick!
The Husky has strength to pull a sled,
And a Bassett Hound will steal your bed.

A Beagle ignores your constant calls,
He’s busy sniffing posts and walls.
Where his pals and chums have gone before,
He’ll come back when your throat is sore.

So purebred, crossbred or a coat of blue,
There’s bound to be one right for you.
But whatever sort of dog you like,
Treat him well and you’ve a mate for life.
