Many of us use Spurrells Road regularly. It is a straight gravel road just west of the village that goes south to the Lockhart shire boundary. The road was named after Charles Henry Spurrell, popularly known as “Charlie.”
Charlie served with the 37th Battalion in France during the Great War. Upon his return, he entered into a land venture with his brother-in-law, Mr J.F. Jelbart, purchasing part of the Wallandool estate. He successfully managed the property at “Travistock.”
Charlie was an apprentice coachbuilder before enlisting in 1916. In March 1918, he sustained a gunshot wound to the chest in France and was sent to Manchester for treatment. He returned to Australia in 1919.
Charlie passed away suddenly in March 1944, cast a gloom over the district where he was a very popular figure known for his fellowship and service. He is buried in Albury.
