Research into the Mundawaddery Cemetery reveals the story of Cyril Johnson, a veteran of the 38th Battalion AIF. Born in Mildura around 1897, Cyril saw action in France and Egypt during the Great War, earning the Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal.

Cyril was the son of Henry Albert Johnson (born Jorgensen), a prominent horticulturalist who was instrumental in establishing the irrigation scheme in Mildura. Cyril enlisted at the age of 18 and served until 1919.

Tragically, Cyril died suddenly at Munyabla near Henty on 20th May 1927, aged only 29. The inquest held at Munyabla found that he had died of his own hand. He is remembered as a loved husband, father, and brother.
