In 1883, descendants of German migrants from South Australia and Victoria took up land around the town site. The first people were Hermann Terlich, Gottlieb Terlich, Martin Kotzur, Martin Pumpa and Gottlieb Scheuner, along with two single men, Gustave Terlich and Gotthelf Terlich.

A Lutheran congregation was subsequently formed on the 2nd November 1883.
